I grew up near Rochester and relocated to Chautuaqua
County, which is located in the southern tier of New York State. When I moved to this rural area, one of the
first things I noticed was the all the abandoned homes and buildings in each of
the small towns. You look at some of the
old abandoned farm houses and homesteads that are dilapidated and left to
decay, it makes you wonder about what it was like in times gone by.
From an artistic point of view a lot of the abandoned houses and storefronts are more appealing and interesting than the new homes and big box stores. When I drove through the town of Dayton, I came across this former grocery/video storefront. The windows had a thick layer of dust. As I peered through I could see the 1950s equipment still inside fully intact as if the owners had vanished. This is a small drawing (8x11) using mixed media (watercolor, colored pencil, and ink).
